ABOUT LITTLE BOUNDARIES

Practical boundaries. Clear expectations.

Little Boundaries is an independent project for parents who want a more deliberate way to set up a child’s iPhone or iPad.

Why we built Little Boundaries

Apple Configurator offers powerful device-management tools, but its technical workflow can be a lot to navigate when your goal is simply to set up your child’s iPhone or iPad thoughtfully.

We wanted to make the relevant capabilities more approachable. Little Boundaries puts a parent-friendly layer around Apple’s existing tools: explaining supported restrictions in everyday language, helping parents understand their options, and guiding them through setup.

Parents bring the knowledge of their child and their family’s needs. Our goal is to make the technical steps easier to follow, so choosing useful boundaries doesn’t depend on having IT experience. Apple Configurator remains part of the workflow and performs the underlying device operations.

What we’re building

A Mac app that helps parents configure supported device restrictions and work through Apple Configurator’s supervision steps. It creates profiles locally, stores family supervision identities in the local Mac Keychain, and offers manual, reviewed settings catalog updates.

Apple’s Family Sharing and Screen Time remain the starting point. The app doesn’t set up Apple Accounts or family groups, read messages, or provide remote monitoring.

Inspect the website source on GitHub. The website and the Mac app have separate repositories.

What’s ready, and what still needs work

The app is a development prototype. A public signed and notarized download is not available. Physical-device testing of supervision and restriction enforcement is still pending, so these pages do not claim verified protection on every device or version.

Code publication is planned so parents and researchers can inspect the implementation. The repository is currently private. We’ll add a public source link when it’s published.

How we approach guidance

Our setup guides link to Apple’s documentation and distinguish Apple features from app features. They are practical guidance, not a guarantee of safety or a claim of professional child-development expertise. We intend to update them when software changes affect the instructions.

Privacy and control

The app includes no developer backend or analytics. Optional catalog checks contact GitHub directly, and Apple Configurator may contact Apple. Parents review changes and decide when to apply them.
